English Music Lessons in Seoul by a Professional Musician

Near Gongdeok Station in Mapo, Rachel’s Music Studio is a music studio specializing in one-on-one music lessons in English for all ages and levels. The studio is run by Rachel, an American musician with music degrees from the University of Michigan (bachelors) and the California Institute of the Arts (masters). Rachel is also the recipient of the prestigious United States Fulbright Research Grant in music composition and has an extensive and varied career as a both a performer and composer.

The studio provides piano, voice, accordion, composition, and music theory lessons. Rachel also offers ABRSM test preparation lessons.

Rachel’s Music Studio is structured like an American home studio, in which a teacher gives give one-on-one, focused lessons to students in such a way that prioritizes each student’s unique needs. Using American/English music curriculum, Rachel’s studio develops students’ confidence and expression in music and English, while also providing thorough and detailed instruction.

With an emphasis on one-on-one lesson time, students receive a personalized education in an immersive English environment. Rachel tailors the curriculum and activities to each student’s interests, age, and needs.

For piano lessons for younger students, Rachel’s Studio primarily uses the Faber Piano Adventures books, which incorporate music theory, technique, and performance education in an integrated way across each level. A thoroughly classical curriculum is also available for intermediate to advanced students, as Rachel received a classical piano education. Rachel supplements all method books and technique books with works that are of interest to the student, such as soundtracks, pop songs, classical pieces, and improvisation. Students are also able to study one particular genre that they are passionate about.

For accordion, composition, and voice lessons the lessons are tailored to each student’s interests, and their own musical goals, while prioritizing warmups and technical exercises that create a strong technical foundation.

Rachel’s teaching style is active and engaged, encouraging students to embody music, speak and sing in English, and develop independent thinking about music. With younger students, Rachel has a variety of original music games that help students internalize musical concepts while having fun. However, she is also detailed as a music instructor, emphasizing the importance of developing strong technique, score comprehension skills, ear training, as well as phrasing and dynamics through her teaching.

Rachel’s Studio offers 30, 40, and 50 minute lessons. The studio offers one weekly entirely one-on-one lesson, and up to 3 supervised practice sessions at the studio. Rachel welcomes students from a variety of backgrounds, including students who wish to study abroad, students of different nationalities, or students with little English experience (as she also speaks Korean for those who need Korean guidance).
